All right, lar? As another "ex-pat" down south, I love reading stuff and seeing pics from "back home"! I love your piece on New Brighton, a place close to my heart . . . Blimey, that pool would be packed in the summer . . . and the smell from the indoor fairground; the noise; the girls hanging round the boys . . . the first kiss under the pier . . . 24 January 2010 - South Coast

As a scouser living down south you have reminded me so strongly of what I miss the most about Merseyside, I can smell and almost taste it in your descriptions. I grew up helping my Dad Fred Battersby deliver hardware round Liverpool and The Wirral, without fail the shopkeepers were always kind to a small girl and my school holidays were full of happy memories of being spoiled by them. Later as a slightly wild teenager I haunted the Witches' Cauldron Club in New Brighton, listening to a group called The Vampires. Their lead singer was a bus conductor called Dave, who wore a bright red suit which was very outlandish for that time, and once when helping them at a church hall gig I was called upon to actually sew him into the tight trousers after they split! When the club finished I used to run in my stockings down hill to catch the last bus home to Moreton, I ruined many a pair as running in stillettos wasn't a good idea and my Dad was always waiting to meet that last bus. We thought we were very hip but looking back the club only sold coke! I don't think until you move away you realise what a strong pull your home area has for you, I can be moved to tears nowadays seeing local pictures, and boy was I proud of the City of Culture tag, and that monster spider, well, all I can say is Wow! Keep the stories coming, and the poems, I think perhaps the poems are my favourite, so well written and so evocative. 4 December 2009 - Devon UK

Wow - thanks for the Blacklers piece! I really miss that store even today. I bought my first suit for job interviews in Blacklers just before they shut - must have been around 1984. It was dark blue pinstripe and got me my first job! After a few years, I grew out of it and gave it away to a priest who was going back to Venezuela and who said he knew someone who could use it. It may well be still being worn today. You're spot on about mushroom brushes. In Sweden in late summer/autumn when people go for a walk in the forest, they always have a plastic bag and a combined knife/brush in case they come across some nice mushrooms. 26 November 2009 - Sweden
