Liverpool Tales from the Mersey Mouth - A book by John Williams

"This is a wonderful collection of writings by John Williams. While it isn't specifically about the Beatles, they are clearly a part of the story, along with the very fiber and fabric of the city that influenced him and them as well. The pieces are short, well written and filled with a delicious sense of humor that shines in the titles as well as the essays." Jan Perry, Cincinnati Post
"John Williams writes in the language of Liverpool, a Scouse scribe who brings to life the people and places, inner thoughts and outer images, the vigour and vitality and essentially, the iron humour of a unique city." Bill Harry, founder of Mersey Beat

That was a fascinating bit of History. I was too young to remember the Cuba Missile crisis
and I can never remember visiting Paddy's market as a kid. I don't think we ever ventured very far at all come to think about it.
Thanks for another great tale John and I hope you and your lovely family have a great Christmas.

As usual John, a wonderfull story.I didn't see the Disney
film, but, being a couple of years older than you I remember
the Cuba crisis well. My problem now is that the U.S.A. has
a president who I belive would use nuclear weapons in a
heartbeat. The Iraq problem should have been solved in
Desert Storm when the battle was won. Now i believe it is
too late and the only people that will be hurt are the
population of Iraq, Sadam will escape with millions into
exile.
And a time for every purpose under heaven.

Originally from Woolton, born there in 1926, and tracing my family history there back to 1740 up to now, I feel the beloved waterfront and three graces are in effect being defaced by such a monstrocity.
It certainly won't complement the beautiful classic architecture of those three buildings.
The owners of the architectural firm where I apprenticed in 1940-42, Medcalf & Medcalf, will be turning over in their graves.
I am glad it will not be there when we visit Liverpool next July to celebrate our 50th. wedding anniversary.
I have entered your web site into my favourites John, and will be back reading more.

When we were back in Liverpool 2000 we visited'the Cavern' in the Albert dock complex. There was one thing missing,no two,the smell of discenfectant and the condensation running down the walls!I used to go into Liverpool from Maghull on the Ribble bus half fare and then scoot into the 'loos' to put on my war paint[as my Father kindly called it]to pass the doorman looking 17[I think that was the age we had to be]The return journey was the same!Did my Mum really believe I'd gone to the flicks? If only she had known how innocent it all was.I never saw anything to be worried about or was I just terribly naive?I know had I been a teenager in these times she would have had something to worry about.

I was studying the painting Guernica for my Spanish class and became enthralled with the imagery prevalent in this work of art. After reading the numerous articles depicting the horrific activities of this bombing raid on innoncent lives, you can't help but want to read more about Picasso's mastery of this work of art. As he said himself, it was not painted to hang in someone's room, instead, to be an absolute tool of violence against the horrific events of war. In several articles there have been parts alluding to a depicture of Hitler himself in the center of the painting. However, I can't find anything else about it, or a file large enough to look for myself. If you have any tips on this, would you please send me the link? Thank you so much!

Liz Ramsey from USA wrote on June 27. 2002, 19:34: E-mail: LimeyLiz73ataol.com -- Hello again John, Just read your article on 'Black Is Not The Only Shade'. I enjoyed and can relate to some of what you say. I have been married to an African-American man for ten years now (my first marriage to a 'white' man ended in divorce after 11 years, producing two wonderful kids). We live in Atlanta, Georgia which is in the southern part of the USA though we are considered North Georgia. Atlanta is a very diverse city so when my husband and I are out together we don't get too many stares. If we were in the 'deep south' however I don't know if it would be the same. We also have a beautiful seven year old son together. My husband is dark skinned and of course my son is lighter skinned, a beautiful shade (as I feel my husband is too). When I am out alone with my son is when we get the stares and some rude questions that I can't believe strangers would ask me. They assume I have adopted my son or I am the babysitter. One lady actually came up to me and told me my son was beautiful and asked "Are you married to blackie?" Of course being gob smacked I just replied "Yes I am". You can understand small children asking those questions out of curiosity but grown adults! My son also is asked sometimes by school mates and friends "Why is your mum white?" My son just replies "I don't know, that's just the way God made her". Nothing else is said and they just go on playing together, which proves that no one is born a racist but is taught it by adults. My older two 'white' children love their little brother so much as they do their African American stepfather and stepbrother. Don't people know that love knows no colour? Keep writing John, you have a real talent for it.
Liz Ramsey from USA wrote on June 27. 2002, 18:39: E-mail: LimeyLiz73ataol.com -- Hello John, I was given your site by a member of the Britpackers of which I am one. I'm an ex-pat living in Atlanta. Your struggle with depression brought tears to my eyes. I have a 21 year old son who has severe drepression. He is bi-polar also known as manic depression. It is a struggle every day with him. He lives with me at the moment due to the circumstances of his life. Finding the right medication is a challenge, but seems to be coping on the one he is taking now. Because of his depression he turned to drugs and alcohol and spent four months in a private rehab clinic. We just take one day at a time, that's all we can do. The hardest part is seeing the pain a loved one goes through with this illness and not being able to take that pain away. The stigma of mental illness is still around and my son feels embarassed about the way he is. Reading your story gives us hope that he can still have a productive life. Thanks so much!

gary atkinson from Australia wrote on June 3. 2002, 14:56: E-mail: jangaryatbigpond.com -- My word - does that bring back memories. Thanks. I remember when I worked as a bus conductor on St. Helens corporation (red & white buses) I was usually on the 7 or 9 run round st.helens - prescot - rainhill - st. helens But I sometimes drew the short straw and had to do the dreaded sat night #89 run to the 'Pool. After the first coupla runs it was quite fun. The drunks were that drunk they were no problem (unless they slept past their stop) and all the rest were comedians who liked a sing song, didn't want to pay their fares and gave you a big tip if you didn't hassle them for their fare. The most embarrasing trip I can remember was when the (future) Mother in law got on one day, and as I went round collecting the fares - whispered to her, "It's OK put your money away" Well she shouted after me "Here take my fare I'm not after charity off no-one" Oh the memories of the buses - this was back in 1964 - 1966 What a wild & good time we all had in those days. Gary.

Chris Bell from United Kingdom wrote on May 13. 2002, 18:30: E-mail: ccbell at ccbmarketing.co.uk -- Hi John:Outside normal working hours, my main leisure pursuit is Stone Little Theatre, a small amateur theatre company in the heart of rural Staffordshire.Having failed to find a musical we like for the autumn, we're actually writing one. It's a show based on the 60's and we're having great fun with the compilation. It's going to have everything: TV and radio sketches, current affairs (with authentic video footage like Martin Luthor King's 'I Have A Dream' speech and the first men the moon) and, of course, the finest music ever. The show will be called 'Walking Back to Happiness' and will open with the famous hit by Helen Shapiro. In our research, I came across your website and was fascinated by some of your stories. In our show we will have a section devoted to the Merseybeat in which I wanted to illustrate both sides of Liverpool in the 60's: the success of its pop groups and comedians on one hand and the struggle for some people to simply exist on the other. I've always loved the 'Liverpool Lullaby' and would dearly like to use this to reinforce the poorer message. Can you help? The nearest I came to what I wanted was your 'Portrait of Alice' Do you have any other short piece about poverty or unemployment in Liverpool during the 60's we could use? We would obviously give you full credit. Please let me know.

Keegan and Toshack ruled supreme! I can remember so manybad days as a Blue (then) - Faircloughs 90th minute winner a real killer blow for a teenager. We all know there is never a pea wack, scouse or curry like your mum or dad made. My dad died when I was 12 and I had never had a curry like his again, until by chance I bought a jar of quick brand mild curry, It was even better.
