Hi, Great stuff!! My husband who is referred to as a (scouser) thought it was hilarious!! Thank you for clearing up the scouser thing. We ran into a gentleman from Yorkshire ( here in the Calfornia wilderness) and he said it had been ages since he heard a scouser accent. My sister-in-law thought it was hilarious because it had been ages since she had heard the scouser term. Me, I am just a crazy american. :)

Oh John, You crack me up sometimes.Just love your boot boy story. Now my shoe stories are quite different, my Dad only ever bought my sister and I Doc Martins , we had the shoes, brown for school and black for Sundays, the boots for winter. Now in the 50s & 60s these shoes were not very fashionable and we hated them ,they never wore out,no matter how much we kicked the crap out of them. I wanted pretty pointy shoes with bows. many year later when my son & daughter both wanted Doc Martins, I nearly had a fit at the price. Should have saved mine would be worth a mint now. Cheers Mary

I am so sorry ! I used to sing the words "Aberfan" to Cardif fans at football games to upset them. I later asked why we sang that and why they would get so mad. I was young then but after I found out I never sang it again. I have two kids of my own now and I just couldn't imagine such a tragedy hapening to them. The crazy thing is my mum is Welsh and I feel more close to that heritage than my English one. I know this sounds crazy but I think the Welsh stick together more and have more of a fighting spirit. May the spirit of those children live on FOREVER. Thanks for this opportunity! Richard.

Thanks for sharing this story John. I think a lot of us can relate to this. I have a recurring nightmare of my teeth falling out one by one in my hand. It's so vivid, I run my tongue along the inside of my mouth to double check when I awake. I know this comes from the time that my dad went off to his dentist with a full set of teeth albeit a throbbing toothache and returned looking to me like a fish out of water. I was horrified and sick to my stomach. Dad was also a chocoholic and his favourite was Fry's. Dad's dentist was Cunliffe on Derby lane, but I've heard from many people about Baker the butcher. I shudder to think how it would affect a baby being without mother's nurture for the first 3 days of life ! Barbaric I call it.

I've only read a few of your pages so far, but I'll read
them all, eventually. I was aware of Liverpool not only
because of the Beatles, but also because my home town, Saint
John, New Brunswick, Canada- a sea port- was at one time
known as "The Liverpool of North America"; an industrial
seaport where many ships were built and which later suffered
economic downturn.
It appears to me that you love Liverpool at least as much as
I love Saint John, no matter how others might disdain and
denigrate it for whatever reason. I hope to get to
Merseyside some time soon; this year perhaps. I've never
been to England and it looks like I'll finally have my
chance. I hope to get to a football game as well, but I have
to decide whom to see and where to see them.
You write extremely well and I'm enjoying your pages
immensely. Please keep up the good work.

the ride on the stallion you so desperately wanted to
mount turned out :)

Wonderful reminisces John. It brought to mind my affairs with the Lovely Juanita and Esterlina. I spent much
of my 15 shillings wages from my Paper Round in Kirkby on them. Later on whilst working in Liverpool I
also discovered the soporophic effects of Bentox, unique to Bent's Houses.
Still later I graduated to the manly Cornbrookes Fighting ale from St Sylvester's club.
It is always great to find another of your stories. Keep 'em coming mate. .

Thanks for another basinful of memories John. Christmas would never have been Christmas without Juanita in our house! the whiff of the barmaid's apron.

Dear aunt Alice forever immortalised in another of your
vivid tales of her. She is still my favourite merseymouth
character.
I had completely forgot until you reminded me that the pineapple
chunks and pear drops took the top layer from the roof of
our mouths :)

I'd better watch out ! I swear I could smell the offlicence when I was
reading this tale. We called it the outdoor or the Offy. I
don't think they did bother who they sold the plonk to as so many of us just had to get the booze in for our parents that they couldnt be bothered arguing.
You drank the posh stuff John, I frequently saw teenagers sitting
in Springfield park swigging the Cider. Moi ? My very first drink
was when I was 17 in the Star & Garter pub. St.John's precinct. It was a lager and
lime and it lasted 3 hours :)

This story did make me laugh as my dad would wear nothing else after they discontinued Avon's 'Wild Country'
You were lucky as when we were teenagers had to live with the sickly smell of Brut !

What a vibrant collection of stories about your hometown, past and present, sir!
Evocative tales, poignant memories and sparkling humour give the non-initiated insight into Liverpool sensibilities, something I appreciate since my grandfather, though born in Liverpool, emigrated as a child and so didn't retain many memories to transmit to his grandchildren.
I really like the tales of childhood and youth. Limpid and true.
Spice Boys had me chuckling. Tell me, did all Liverpool men wear Old Spice? My grandfather did, and so did my father (though born here), until my mother finally convinced him to try something else much later in life.
Keep adding to your stories!
Best regards
Carolyn Perkes

I come from LIVERPOOL and known as a SCOUSER and found your
comments to be very amusing even though i do not agree that
the name SCOUSER is meant to be a bad thing, All people in
LIVERPOOL are under the impression that the name SCOUSER
comes from the stew, but even if it is meant to be bad thing
LIVERPOOL is well known for its sense of humour and can
laugh these things off.
Anyway sorry to trouble you but i thought i would just drop
you an e-mail to get it off my chest.
See u later

It is touching to see that some of the history is still here. Iheard about the somali community there long before i came to this country. When I went to Liverpool could not see any.
Well done for your work and effort.
