I was born and bred in Kingsheath Ave worked in every job you had except the merch. All my mates went in but my dad would'nt let me. I done my nasho in the army, they had to stay in the merch until they where 26.Talking about you living in the 8 my late wife lived in Alt St her dad ran the betting shop in Beaumont St opposite the Clock. Her sister lived in Ritson St. I think the Red Brick was on the corner I know my missus went shopping on Lodge Lane just after our first baby was born and came home without her she had left the pram outside the shop. I wonder how many women in Liverpool have done that. Mind you she was a kopite and blonde. Loved your segment on the buses. I worked out of Stanley Green Lane to the uni!!! Those that don't know, I, like you, remember my first dock rd. run it was a 67 from Old Swan to Seaforth I went upstairs and I could not see the front of the bus for the smoke and as you said they done the same to me. They all piled off at the bottom of Sandhills and the old saying the one behind lad. The poor guard had to buy the tea at every end I was glad when I became a driver. I am sorry to have taken up so much time but I thank you for your site. My kids could not understand why I was laughing so much as they were only babies when we fled the onslaught of Thacherism will write again when I finish reading this fascinating saga on life thanks mate. Hello
My father mailed me your web site from Walton, Liverpool. I grew up
in Liverpool attending Whitefield Road School, Florence Melly and
Stanley Park Comprehensive School. I
left Liverpool in 1982 to attend Florida State University and California
State University studying Professional Nursing and health care. I now
live with my husband and son in West Palm Beach, Florida.
My entire family still live in Liverpool.
Tonight I plan to make a nice big pot of tea and when everyone has gone
to bed I will sit here and enjoy every part of your web site. I just
hit "Santa's Grotto"...I remember it well until we went to
TJ Hughes one year for the "Dancing Waters"!
I am 46 years old, but have a million memories that all came flooding
back via your web site. What a pleasure to find you, I am going to call
my Dad right now and thank him for sending your email address.
Thank you again. I will let the other two Liverpool nurses I know about
your web site.
Cheers and Thanks you again
Sincerely

Nice message.
However properly designed shutters could be considered primarily as
a means of climate control
Keep the sun out of the building during the summer and keep the warmth
in the building at night.
Security may be considered as a secondary aspect.
Granted not many systems look good. In most cases they are retro fitted
and so are not intgrated
into a proper design.
In Europe where shutters are built into the building as new, the appearance
is generally pleasing
and all guides, headgear etc are concealed.
In the UK most shutters are ugly security types and this mitigates against
widespread acceptance
for the domestic market.

I think when the word was chosen it was from anger

You are right the cavern was for beatniks and jazz freaks. I was jazz crazy and had a great time working as a cloakroom girl at the cavern for years. What more could I ask great music fabulous bands and I got paid to be there. Those really were the days. As for the pierhead a friend of my dad [ who fought in the Spanish civil war] was a passionate communist and I heard him often when he was on his soapbox . His name was Jackie Lynch I wonder if anyone remembers him. I will eventually work my way through the whole site. Thank you so much , I just love it. Goodnight Ann

My God!! I stumbled across your piece on De La Salle, and there was Brother Oswald's name and all sorts of boyhood memories started flooding back, some good, some not so good. I was there from 1959 to 1964, and had the distinction (I think) of being the first in my year to experience "the strap" - for adjusting my woodworking plane without being told to by the teacher. Harry Hodson called me a "wretched boy" and laid into me with gusto. AND I'd already known how to adjust the damn plane, and did it right!!! Brother Oswald was succeeded by Brother John, not so affectionately known as "the blob"; then there was the chemistry teacher, who insisted that "my name is MISTER OWEN to you, and I wish to be known as such". And so "Such" he became. And the lunatic Brother Joseph, who seemed always to be trying to gas us or blow us up; and O'Leary who never appreciated the addition of a "J" to his car's registration number (UNK...); and the psycho Kelly who just liked to bully small boys. Funny that; I don't remember any of them with fondness or affection. I don't think any of them really cared about us either. I wonder what happened to them, and to my classmates who shared evenings doing homework at the central library in William Brown Street, and chatting up the girls there, and standing outside the Cavern listening to the music... The Beatles had it right - there are places I'll remember all my life, though some have changed. Some for ever, not for better...

Julia Davies from Liverpool wrote on May 12. 2003, 12:39: E-mail: julia at julia.freeserve.co.uk -- I felt quite homesick for Liverpool and Liverpool people when I read your story. I came to live and work in West Yorkshire in 1969 and Yorkshire people are wonderful. but the cosmopolitan flavour which epitomises Liverpool is noticeably absent!!!
Angela from Cyprus wrote on May 12. 2003, 07:35: E-mail: titina23 at spidernet.com.cy -- Last of the Great White Liars I see John. This was a good one had me laughing out loud. BTW, my recent e-mails to you have been bouncing. Let me know if you've changed server again please.

I enjoyed reading your memories of Liverpool's Chinatown - and am very interested in finding out more - particularly what Chinatown was like during WWII and just after - could you help me, please? My deadline is before Friday 16 May, so this is very short notice I'm afraid, but I'd be very grateful! Many thanks

What a wonderful way to start my day. Thank you once again.

Pamela from USA via Liverpool wrote on May 6. 2003, 16:55: E-mail: pjkegs at juno.com -- Hi John, your stories remind me of my own childhood memories of Bootle and going to New Brighton, standing on the dock waiting for the ferry with me bucket and pail and sitting on the beach freezing to death; watching dad trying to put the deck chair together in the nipper of a wind; mum giving us sandwiches loaded with sand; then hot tea poured from the thermos as the goose pimples showed their bumpy heads...that was the life!!
Pamela from USA wrote on May 6. 2003, 16:40: E-mail: pjkegs at juno.com -- Hi John, love your stories...when is the book going to be published?
John Pinto from Australia wrote on May 6. 2003, 04:07: -- I have just returned from a trip back to Liverpool, my last visit being 11 years ago. Stumbling on to this web page prompted me to put one or two observations about the changes I had seen since my last visit. People were definitely enjoying a better life style, albeit at a cost of increasing their debt levels(universal). More congestion, more pollution. One of the main redeeming factors for all of my gripes was the lasting Liverpudlian sense of humour and generosity, if you lose this, the City will become a southern satellite. To all those people I caught up with, thank you, to all those I missed, maybe next time. This web page is full of all the Liverpool goodness, rejoice in it.

walter banks from Australia via Liverpool wrote on May 5. 2003, 02:01: E-mail: ozsportsashmore at bigpond.com.au -- It's enough to make you cry. My grandmother Lawless, born about 1880, had 15 children but only managed to raise 5. The other 10 never made it to 5 years. I have lived in aus for 40 years now but I still intently watch peoples reactions when I am introduced and I say I am from Bootle. Aussies couldnt care less but you get a subtle reaction from a fair number of English people as though they had shaken hands with something out of a zoo. Regards Wally.
